Google’s AI Overviews now reach over 1.5 billion people monthly. CEO Sundar Pichai shared this figure as part of Alphabet’s Q1 2025 earnings report. Google began widely rolling out AI Overviews in May 2024. Although there were some awkward suggestions initially, the company has continued to improve the tool by expanding its coverage and adding ads, positioning itself to compete with other AI-powered search tools like ChatGPT Search and Perplexity.

AI Overviews are just one of several AI initiatives the company is working on. In Q1, Google introduced the Gemini 2.5 Pro experimental AI model, a feature that allows users to create AI-generated podcasts from Gemini’s Deep Research tool, and a Gemini-powered feature for Google Maps that scans screenshots to help with trip planning.

Additionally, Google announced in March that it would be replacing Assistant with Gemini on mobile devices in the coming months. Pichai mentioned that later this year, devices such as tablets, cars, and accessories like headphones and watches would also transition to Gemini.

On the hardware side, Google unveiled the Pixel 9A in Q1, but its launch was delayed until April 10th due to a “component quality issue.”

For Q1, Google reported $90.2 billion in revenue, marking a 12% year-over-year increase. Pichai also noted that the company reached 270 million subscriptions, driven primarily by YouTube and Google One.

However, Google is facing ongoing legal challenges, including potential antitrust actions that could lead to the company being split up. A remedies trial is underway following a ruling that Google is a monopoly in search, and the company recently lost a case regarding its ad tech monopoly.
