Google is experimenting with a new way to deliver search results — through a personalized, podcast-style audio clip. The feature, called Audio Overviews, uses the power of Google’s Gemini AI to create short summaries based on your search, delivered in a conversational tone by two virtual hosts.
This tool is especially useful when you’re looking for a more detailed explanation — such as the history of a national holiday — rather than a simple fact like a date. Instead of scanning through several links, users hear an engaging back-and-forth discussion summarizing the main points pulled from top search results.
You can customize the listening experience too, adjusting volume or changing playback speed from as slow as 0.25x to as fast as 2x. The sources used to create the audio are also listed, so you can explore them further if you’re curious.
Although this isn’t Google’s first time offering audio summaries, the feature was initially available only within its NotebookLM platform. That version has since been upgraded to allow live interaction with the AI hosts and includes a “Deep Dive” mode for more focused content.
To try Audio Overviews in Google Search, users need to opt in through Google Labs, where experimental tools are available for early access and feedback.
